Kestrel / Nielsen-Kellerman Co.

Nielsen-Kellerman Company designs, manufactures and distributes rugged, waterproof environmental and sports performance instruments for active lifestyles and technical applications, including Kestrel Weather & Environmental Meters, Kestrel Ballistics Meters for long range shooting accuracy, NK Electronics for Rowing and Paddling, and Blue Ocean Rugged Megaphones PA Systems.

NK focuses relentlessly on meeting the specialized measurement needs of demanding outdoor customers. Olympic athletes, firefighters, and military professionals are just some of the NK customers who rely on our products for accuracy and durability. Delivering anything less than the highest level of quality is not an option. Whatever the niche, we know our customers won't forgive us for letting them down, and will tell their friends what they think of us, good or bad. From order entry to customer support for the life of our products (and beyond), when our customers call, email, tweet (@KestrelWeather) or reach out to us on chat or Facebook, we do everything we can to ensure our products are doing the job our customers need.

Every Kestrel Instrument undergoes rigorous functional and sealing testing and calibration against NIST-traceable standards before it leaves the plant. Every product we build is also covered by a five-year warranty against defect or failure to perform. Beyond the warranty period, we support our customers’ needs with our trade-in/trade-up program that provides an allowance towards a replacement Kestrel product, no matter the age or condition of the product being replaced. We know that convincing customers to purchase a Kestrel Instrument is just the first step -- once you're a Kestrel customer, we want you to stay one for life. We're proud of our tremendous repeat and referred customers and feel confident offering our 30-day no questions asked satisfaction guarantee.

NK began business in an upstate New York basement, and we demonstrate our commitment to US manufacturing by walking the walk every day. Now located in Boothwyn, PA, we design here in the US, we source the parts and components we can in the US, and we build here in the US with a great team constantly encouraged and supported in learning new skills. We continuously improve our product, processes, flow, inventory management, and people to stay cost-competitive and ensure we can deliver what our customers need when they need it. We are recognized throughout the mid-Atlantic area as a model Lean manufacturer and support the manufacturing community with plant tours, information sharing, and training opportunities.

We strive to conduct our business in a sustainable manner and minimize harm to the environment by actively implementing company-wide plans to conserve energy, reduce waste, and recycle. We conduct life-cycle analysis of shipping impact to determine the most effective packaging for each product and minimize "shipping air". We use recycled products in packaging where the benefits are clear. Our building was constructed with energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems. We support working from home, car-, and cycling to work. And, most importantly in our view, we don’t build "disposable" products. Most NK and Kestrel products do their job for years, and many are passed on to new users (even after years in challenging desert environments). We design our products to work, not fill up landfills.

After 30 years, we've got a lot of friends in some close-knit communities. We appreciate our customers and friends and focus our charitable activities on giving back to the communities that support us and our employees. We seek out charitable organizations that we believe are helping make the world a better place in ways relevant to our customers. We financially support the Korey Stringer Institute in their mission to prevent sudden death in sport, including deaths from heat stress in football. We support AmericanSnipers.org in their mission to ensure our snipers and special operators are equipped with the tools they need to conduct their fight. Closer to home, we give blood, walk, collect food, buy gifts, and do all the things that people do to try to make their community better for those having a rough time.
