Down east books

Down East Books is the go-to source for books about Maine. Presenting Vacationland's leading writers in narrative nonfiction, travel, cooking, history, and children’s books, Down East invites readers from all over the country to experience the wonder and beauty of our state. We’re proud to publish authors including Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Richard Russo, woodworking icon Thomas Moser, Maine Poet Laureate Wesley McNair and many other prominent Mainers.

In 1967, the year of its founding, Down East Books published the children’s classic Lobsterman, by renowned artist Dahlov Ipcar – and still loved by children today. Down East also publishes contemporary favorites including the Fairy House Handbook and the Fairy House Cookbook by Liza Gardner Walsh.

Down East tells the story of Maine in all its forms, from biographies of famous Mainers to intimate portrayals of family life – and even a few jokes at our own expense. Statesman, by long-time Maine journalist Douglas Rooks, celebrates the life and political legacy of George Mitchell. Stop Here, This Is the Place, by award-winning novelist Susan Conley and celebrated photographer Winky Lewis, captures a year in the life of a group of children in Maine, through words and images. We also publish humor writing by John Gould, Bill Green, Sarah Smiley and others.

Cookbooks from Maine icons like Red's Eats: World's Best Lobster Shack and Standard Baking Company Pastries celebrate the flavors of the state; while books like the New York Times bestselling 50 Greatest Players in Red Sox History celebrate the teams that make us cheer. Guides like 50 Things to Do in Maine before You Die, Ultimate Acadia and Skiing Maine offer inside expertise on the best Maine has to offer.

If you’re looking to experience life Down East, you’ve come to the right place.
